Here are the 21 goals of Nashville's Agenda, produced by Nashvillians talking together during the community goal-setting process of 1993:


Nashville should be...

GOAL: A community with 100 percent literacy -- offering life-long learning opportunities to all Nashvillians and a well-funded system of small, safe neighborhood-based schools that involve parents and prepare students for college, work and life.

GOAL: A safe community that provides all young Nashvillians with structured and creative opportunities for positive development year-round.

GOAL: A place where senior citizens interact fully in the community -- contributing and care-giving, nurtured and cared for.

GOAL: A comprehensive, accessible and affordable quality health-care system emphasizing wellness and disease prevention for all Nashvillians. Health

GOAL: Affordable, adequate, and safe housing for all Nashvillians that encourages pride, diversity and a strong sense of community.

GOAL: A safe, crime-free community for all Nashvillians with an effective criminal justice system that emphasizes punishment, deterrence and restitution.

GOAL: A city that is known for how it values and embraces diversity, understands and addresses the primary causes of social problems, and supports people in need.

GOAL: A visual and performing arts cultural center with excellent facilities and diverse opportunities accessible by all Nashvillians.

GOAL: An environmentally-sensitive community ranked in the top 10 percent of our nation's major cities, recognized for clean air and water, and emphasizing natural areas and green spaces.

GOAL: A city with a waste-management system that is comprehensive, economical and environmentally responsible.

GOAL: A community that effectively plans for, implements and monitors responsible growth to protect and enhance the natural and built environments, through informed citizen involvement.

GOAL: A city with diverse recreational activities and facilities that are convenient, safe and affordable for all Nashvillians, with a variety of both city-wide and neighborhood-based cultural and entertainment events.

GOAL: An expanded network of safe and attractive parks and preserving natural areas in all parts of the community -- with a special emphasis on the Cumberland River, the inner city, and green spaces designed for non-motorized uses.

GOAL: More widely recognized as Music City USA, emphasizing Nashville's support for all kinds of music and the recruitment of new music-related businesses.

GOAL: A world-class tourist destination known for excellent hospitality, accommodations and facilities, with a variety of outstanding attractions and entertainment.

GOAL: Home to major professional and amateur sports with the facilities to accommodate them.

GOAL: An environmentally-sound regional transportation system that provides a variety of options for moving people and goods safely -- including an efficient, affordable public transit system that connects cities within the Nashville region -- and with linkages to areas beyond Middle Tennessee.

GOAL: A good place to live, work and visit that is accessible and that preserves and protects the character, integrity and uniqueness of historic sites, structures and the natural environment.

GOAL: A vibrant 24-hour downtown that is recognized as a safe and attractive place to live, work and visit -- with ample affordable parking, first-class shopping and entertainment, and other revitalized business activity.

GOAL: A strong, diverse, regional economic center that attracts and retains better-paying jobs and career opportunities with skills training available to all Nashvillians.

GOAL: An active citizenry with free access to the information necessary for taking part in community decisions -- from the neighborhood to the metropolitan level -- and strong community leadership that is accessible, accountable, inclusive and representative of all sections of the city.
